YouTube has begun removing AI-generated content from its platform. The company announced that it will start scanning for “Photorealistic” AI videos to categorize such content. It adopted C2PA, a standard for encoding provenance data in AI content, as well as SynthID, a watermarking tool developed by Google.

Several popular channels appear to have been taken down. According to reports from Kapwing, a video editing and content creation platform, channels such as CuentosFacianantes will no longer exist on the site, despite having more than 5.9 million members and over 1.2 billion total views. Screen Culture and KH Studio also gained popularity by distributing AI-generated movie trailers for unexisting films and TV projects, according to a Qazinform News Agency correspondent, citing Ars Technica.

This comes after YouTube CEO Neal Mohan highlighted the prevalence of AI slop. In a letter to users, he stated that the company plans to “reduce the spread of low quality AI content” by improving on the mechanism it already uses to generate spam and clickbait.

However, the platform is not against the use of AI, but the development is intended to balance transparency. YouTube is telling advertisers that it is the future of television, but AI spam could jeopardize the idea.

A YouTube spokesperson explained that “Generative AI is a tool, and like any tool, it can be used to create both high- and low-quality content.” We remain committed to connecting users with high-quality content, regardless of how it was created. All content uploaded to YouTube must comply with our community guidelines, and if we find that content violates a policy, we remove it.”
